Software engineer resume in Australia for international students

Software engineer resume for Australia as an international student: what tech recruiters scan first, title translation, grouped skills, GitHub and certs.

A software engineer resume in Australia for an international student or overseas-trained developer has to do three things in the first scan: show a title the recruiter recognises, show the stack the job ad asks for, and show that you can start work. Most of the resumes we review from overseas developers have the experience. What they lack is the Australian shape around it.

This article covers the IT-specific layer. The base mechanics of Australian format, spelling and length are in the guide on converting your resume to the Australian format. The examples below are anonymised composites from reviewed client cases, not real individuals. Ananya is a Monash master's graduate in IT on a Temporary Graduate visa, applying for full-stack roles in Melbourne. Rahul is a Java backend engineer from Pune with nine years in banking platforms, now in Sydney with full work rights.

What do Australian tech recruiters scan for first?

They read the most recent title, the work-rights line and the top third of the skills section, in that order, before deciding whether the bullets are worth reading. If any of the three is missing or unfamiliar, the resume is usually set aside without the experience being weighed.

The work-rights line sits directly under your name and contact details, in plain words that describe the status you already hold. A bare visa number means nothing to most tech recruiters. "Full working rights in Australia (Temporary Graduate visa)" does. The guide on writing work rights on an Australian resume gives the exact sentence for each situation.

The summary comes next. In our reviewed IT cases, the weakest summaries opened with "Results-driven IT graduate" or "Senior Software Engineer with 9+ years". The strongest named the specialism, the shipped product and the stack in the first sentence. Rahul's became "Java backend engineer specialising in core banking payment services, Spring Boot and Kafka, nine years on platforms serving retail and corporate customers."

How do you translate an overseas IT job title for Australian recruiters?

Use the title most current Australian job ads use for the work you did, and keep your employer's original title in brackets. In IT the role title often travels; the level and the domain vocabulary are what usually need translating.

Internal titles are the first fix. "Member of Technical Staff", "Associate Consultant L2" and "Programmer Analyst" carry no level outside the company. Check what the target ads say. In one of our reviewed cases the resume said "Software Engineer" while most target ads said "Full Stack Developer", and the work supported either. Mirroring the ads' title matters because recruiters categorise on the most recent title and tracking systems rank on it. For title vocabulary, the ABS occupation classification (OSCA) is a neutral dictionary for title vocabulary.

Calibrate the level honestly in both directions. If you led a team of six through three releases, say "Lead". If you were the strongest engineer in a team someone else led, say "Senior". The same applies to bullets: "gained exposure to microservices" undersells real ownership, and "led the platform migration" oversells a role that contributed to it.

Domain vocabulary is the second fix, and banking is where it matters most. Rahul's resume described "regulatory reporting support". His real work was anti-money-laundering transaction monitoring. Australian banking ads use AUSTRAC and AML/CTF language for that work, and APRA prudential standards such as CPS 234 for information security and operational risk. Map your work to those terms only where you genuinely did it. The guide on putting overseas experience on an Australian resume covers employer context lines and converting figures.

How should you group the skills section on an Australian IT resume?

Group skills into labelled categories, with items separated by middots, never as one comma-separated block. The shape that worked across our IT cases is Languages, Frameworks, Architecture, Databases & Search, DevOps & Tools and Domain, with four to eight items each.

Languages: Java 17 · TypeScript · Python · SQL
Frameworks: Spring Boot · React · Next.js · Node.js
Architecture: Microservices · REST APIs · Event-driven design
Databases & Search: PostgreSQL · Oracle · Elasticsearch · Redis
DevOps & Tools: Docker · Kubernetes · Jenkins · GitHub Actions · AWS
Domain: Payments · AML/CTF transaction monitoring · Core banking

Four details decide whether this block works.

Casing and spelling. Write product names the way the vendor does: Next.js, PostgreSQL, TypeScript, GitHub. Expand an acronym on first use if the ad might spell it out.

Current versions. "Java 1.8" or "Angular 8" with no sign of anything newer reads as stale. List the version you work with now.

A relational signal. If your only database is MongoDB, add the SQL you genuinely know. Many enterprise ads screen on SQL or PostgreSQL.

True depth. Never write "Git/CI/CD basics" for a pipeline you own. Leave out skill bars and star ratings; parsers cannot read them and recruiters ignore them.

How do students and 485 graduates use projects and GitHub on an Australian resume?

Put your GitHub or portfolio URL as visible plain text in the contact line, and build an Australian Project Experience section from real coursework when your work history is thin. Together they give a recruiter something local and verifiable to read.

Ananya had no Australian developer job. She did have a capstone built for an industry partner, two group projects and three years of part-time retail work alongside study. Her section looked like this:

Australian Project Experience
Full-Stack Capstone: Booking Platform for an Industry Partner · Monash University, Melbourne, 2025
- Built a React and Node.js booking app with a PostgreSQL backend, deployed on AWS
- Delivered weekly releases to the partner across a 12-week engagement
github.com/ananya-dev/booking-platform

Name each entry by the course and its deliverable, date it to the year the work was done, and never add a tool the work did not use. Order projects by relevance to the target role and drop the off-target ones. If a capstone was a genuine paid or industry engagement, describe it as what it was.

Two further points. If you have production experience anywhere, Work Experience goes above Projects, because projects-first reads as fresh-graduate even when it is not. And keep the retail job. Three years of Australian work concurrent with study is proof of local reliability, and the guide on writing a resume with no Australian experience shows how to frame it.

Which certifications read well on an Australian IT resume?

Cloud certifications from AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud read well for developer roles, and they double as keyword matches. For support and service desk roles, ITIL 4 Foundation and CompTIA A+ are the entry signals; for agile delivery, PSM I.

List an in-progress certification with an honest status, for example "AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Associate (in progress, target March 2027)". Keep the section to about four role-relevant items, ordered by relevance rather than date. Short introductory courses and a bare "Git" listed as a certification weaken the real credentials beside them.

What mistakes do overseas IT resumes make in Australia?

The common pattern is strong engineering described in a way the Australian reader cannot weigh: brochure bullets with no numbers, merged employers and missing local vocabulary. Each one is checkable on your own document today.

Bullets with no engineering numbers. "Worked on a high-traffic payments platform" says nothing. Give scale, latency or release cadence: "Cut payment API p95 latency from 800 ms to 220 ms* across 2M* daily transactions". Mark estimates with an asterisk and add a footnote that they are approximate.

Several employers merged into one block. Every employer gets its own dated entry, including client placements under one services firm.

US spelling. Optimize, analyze and color are a quick signal of a resume that has not been localised. Use optimise, analyse and colour.

Overseas personal details. Remove the photo, date of birth, marital status and nationality.

No Australian compliance vocabulary. If you handled personal data, the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles are terms local ads use. For security-adjacent work, the Essential Eight. Use them only where your work genuinely touched them.

Dropping referees. Keep two, ideally Australian once you have them, alongside LinkedIn recommendations. A capstone supervisor or retail manager in Melbourne counts.

Before you send the next application, run your resume and the job ad through the free resume check. It shows the missing keywords and structural findings in your own text, not a score. If you are unsure whether the tracking system is the problem, read whether SEEK uses an ATS.

An Australian IT resume works when the title, the work rights and the stack are visible in the first scan, and every bullet carries a number the reader can weigh. Translate the vocabulary, group the skills, surface the GitHub and keep the referees, and the engineering you already have will be read.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put my GitHub on a software engineer resume in Australia?

Yes, when it holds work you would discuss at interview. Put the GitHub or portfolio URL as visible plain text in the contact line, and again beside each project it supports. A hidden hyperlink behind the word "GitHub" is lost when the file is parsed or printed.

Should my resume title be Software Engineer or Full Stack Developer?

Use the title most of your target Australian job ads use, provided your work supports it. Open six to ten current ads, note the dominant title, and mirror it on your most recent role. Keep the employer's original title in brackets so nothing is hidden.

Which certifications help an IT resume in Australia?

Cloud certifications from AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud read well for developer roles. ITIL 4 Foundation and CompTIA A+ suit support roles, and PSM I suits agile delivery. In-progress certifications can be listed with an honest status and target date.

Do international students put projects above work experience?

Only when there is no production work to show. A student or recent graduate with thin experience leads with an Australian Project Experience section built from real coursework. Anyone with genuine industry experience keeps Work Experience first and Projects after it.
