Resume format for international students in Australia

The Australian resume format for international students: header rules, page length, Australian Project Experience, spelling and a template to copy.

A resume for international students in Australia is a plain document of one to two pages: a clean header, a short summary, your Australian study and project work near the top, grouped skills, and tertiary education only. No photo, no date of birth, no full street address. This guide sets out the format Australian recruiters expect, section by section, and ends with a plain template you can copy. It is written for the student who arrived with a resume from home, or built one from a US template, and wants to know what to change.

The examples below are anonymised composites from student resumes reviewed in our 1-on-1 sessions. Nothing in this guide covers visa matters. Where it mentions work rights, it covers only how to phrase a status you already hold.

What section order do Australian recruiters expect on a student resume?

Australian recruiters expect your name and contact block, a work-rights line, a Professional Summary, your strongest evidence (Australian Project Experience for most students, Work Experience if you have relevant roles), then Skills, Education, Certifications and References. Recruiters read top down and fast, so the strongest content sits on page one.

The full order, with what each section holds:

  1. Name and contact line. Full name, then one line: location, phone, email, LinkedIn URL.
  2. Work-rights line. One sentence, directly under the contact line.
  3. Professional Summary. Four to six sentences: role framing, your degree, your scarcest relevant skill with the named tools, your Australian proof, your availability.
  4. Australian Project Experience. Dated entries for Australian coursework, capstones, group projects, volunteering and internships. For students and recent graduates with thin work history only.
  5. Work Experience. Reverse-chronological, achievement bullets, casual roles reframed around what you delivered.
  6. Key Projects. Only for projects not already covered above.
  7. Skills. Labelled groups separated by middots, never a comma dump.
  8. Education. Tertiary only, highest first, with the graduation year.
  9. Certifications. Only credentials a recruiter would recognise; omit the section if nothing survives.
  10. References. Two referees, ideally Australian, plus LinkedIn recommendations.

Use these plain headings. Creative headings ("My Journey", "What I Bring") and two-column layouts both break the parsers employers use to read resumes before a person does. Where that filter actually sits is covered in what SEEK does and does not do with your resume.

What goes in the header of an Australian resume, and what stays out?

The header is your full name, a single contact line (suburb and state, Australian mobile, professional email, LinkedIn URL) and one work-rights line beneath it. Everything else that a resume from home puts at the top comes off.

What stays out: photo, date of birth, age, marital status, gender, religion, nationality and full home address. Australian resumes omit all of these. Including them flags a resume written for another market and adds bias risk for the employer. The one status signal that belongs in the header is the work-rights line.

A composite example. A master's student from Hyderabad studying in Sydney arrived with this header:

PRIYA R. [photo]
DOB: 14/03/1999 · Female · Single · Indian
Flat 12, 48 Example Street, Parramatta NSW 2150
+61 4xx xxx xxx · priya.r.1999@gmail.com

The Australian version:

Priya R.
Parramatta, NSW · 04xx xxx xxx · priya.r@email.com · linkedin.com/in/priya-r
Available for part-time and casual work; located in Sydney.

The suburb and state stay because they tell the recruiter you are local to the role. The street, the postcode, the date of birth and the personal descriptors go.

The work-rights line for a student. Recruiters look for this line before they read anything else, so it goes directly under the contact line, never buried in a paragraph. For a current student the phrasing is either the generic line, "Working rights in Australia per current student visa conditions.", or the availability framing shown above, "Available for part-time and casual work; located in Melbourne." Keep it to that one sentence. Do not add dates, numbers or any detail the document cannot back up. A recent graduate on the Temporary Graduate visa writes "Full working rights in Australia (Temporary Graduate visa)." The exact sentence for each status, and what never to write, is in how to write your work rights on an Australian resume.

How long should a resume for an international student in Australia be?

One to two pages. One page is fine while your experience is thin. Aim for about two once you have Australian project work, casual roles and an internship worth showing. Do not force a US-style single page by shrinking the font, and do not drift to three pages as a student.

Study Australia, the Australian Government's site for international students, puts the employer expectation at a one to two page document (source). Our 1-on-1 case work points the same way: the student resumes that read well were cut, not compressed.

Page rules that follow from this:

  • Strongest content on page one. A recruiter who stops at the fold should already have your summary, your work-rights line and your best Australian evidence.
  • Cut, do not shrink. Remove the weakest entries rather than reducing margins or font size.
  • Drop filler certificates. "Excel Basics" or a bare "Git" does not survive a quick scan. Keep credentials with genuine industry recognition and mark in-progress ones honestly, for example "(in progress)".
  • Drop one-day stints. A single-day help-desk exercise is not a Work Experience entry. If it produced a real skill, fold it into the Skills section.
  • Strip graphics. Skill-dot ratings, progress bars and icons add parsing noise and no information.

Should education or experience come first on a student resume?

Neither comes first. The summary comes first, and what follows it is decided by what you have to show. If you have relevant roles with real achievements, Work Experience goes directly after the summary. If your experience is thin, which is the usual case for a student, an Australian Project Experience section goes first and Work Experience follows it. Education keeps its own section lower down, with your institution also named in the summary so it is visible on the first read.

This is the pad-thin rule. The default for experienced candidates is Experience before Projects, because a Projects-first resume reads as fresh-graduate and some parsers mistake project titles for job titles. For students that reading is accurate, and the Australian Project Experience section is where your local evidence lives, so it earns the top slot.

Two composites show the split:

  • A UTS data analytics student from Hanoi with two years as a reporting analyst before her course. She has achievements with numbers, so Work Experience follows the summary and her Australian capstone sits beneath it.
  • An RMIT marketing student from Chennai whose only paid work is weekend retail in Melbourne. His Australian Project Experience (a live client campaign for a Fitzroy cafe, a group analytics project) goes first. The retail role still appears under Work Experience, reframed around what he delivered: rostering, stock counts, upsell results.

Education section rules. Tertiary only. Highest qualification first, with the expected or actual graduation year, for example "Master of Information Technology, Monash University, expected Nov 2026". Remove Year 10 and Year 12 results, board exams and primary schooling. Omit a low GPA unless an employer asks for one; there is no universal cut-off to quote.

What counts as experience when you have none in Australia is covered in how to write a resume with no Australian experience.

What is Australian Project Experience and how do you write it?

Australian Project Experience is a dated section that presents your Australian coursework, capstones, group projects, volunteering and internship work as experience. Each entry has a plain-English title, the institution, city and year, and two achievement bullets. It exists because the question behind most Australian job ads is whether you have done real work here, and for a student the honest answer sits in your course.

Each bullet follows one shape: action verb, what you built or did, impact or scope, context. A worked entry from a composite Monash business analysis student:

**Enterprise Systems: Business Process Modelling** · Monash University, Melbourne, 2025
- Modelled the order-to-cash process for a simulated manufacturer in BPMN 2.0 using Signavio, identifying four handoff delays across 23 activities
- Produced a 14-page requirements pack and presented recommendations to a panel of three lecturers, graded in the top band of the cohort*

Rules that make the section credible:

  • Title the work, not the unit. "Enterprise Systems: Business Process Modelling", not "Enterprise Systems unit".
  • Date it to the year the work was done. Not the year you enrolled.
  • Open every bullet with an action verb. Led, Built, Modelled, Designed, Developed, Analysed, Delivered, Produced, Reduced, Improved. Never "was involved in" or "gained foundational knowledge in".
  • Quantify, and mark estimates. An estimated number gets an asterisk and a footnote line at the end of the document. If no defensible number exists, use a scope descriptor such as "for a four-person team".
  • Never invent. No course, deliverable or tool that your transcript and your own files cannot back up.

Three to five entries is the usual range; pick the ones that match the job ad.

Which spelling and date format does an Australian resume use?

Australian English throughout, and Month YYYY for date ranges. US spelling is one of the clearest signals that a resume was not written for the Australian market, and it is the easiest to fix.

Write thisNot this
organise, specialise, analyse, optimiseorganize, specialize, analyze, optimize
colour, centre, modellingcolor, center, modeling
licence (the noun), license (the verb)license for both
enrol, enrolment, fulfilenroll, enrollment, fulfill
resumerésumé

For "program", mirror the ad: "program" is the form to use on an Australian resume.

Set the document language to English (Australia) in Word or Google Docs before you start, so the spell-checker works for you.

Dates. Date ranges read "Mar 2025 to Jun 2025", month abbreviated or in full, consistently. Any formal date is DD/MM/YYYY, never MM/DD/YYYY, which is read backwards here.

Numbers and money. Convert lakh and crore to Australian currency: "₹50 lakh" becomes "about A$90 000*", the asterisk marking an estimate.

Phone. Use your Australian mobile in the local format, 04xx xxx xxx.

Is there a plain Australian resume template for students to copy?

Yes. The template below is the section order and formatting in plain markdown. Fill it in and export to PDF with a single column and standard headings.

* Figures marked with an asterisk are estimates.

Notes on using it:

  • The footnote line is required whenever an asterisk appears in the document.
  • Delete the Certifications section if nothing credible survives the curation rules above.
  • Keep both referees, ideally Australian: a capstone supervisor, an internship lead, a casual-work manager. Add LinkedIn recommendations from the same people.
  • Keep four to eight items per skills category and name the categories for the role.

How do I move my current resume into this format?

Work through the six steps in order. Each is checkable on your own document.

Step 1: Rebuild the header

Full name, one contact line (suburb and state, Australian mobile, professional email, LinkedIn URL), then the single work-rights line for the status you already hold. Nothing else.

Step 2: Remove the personal details Australian recruiters do not expect

Delete the photo, date of birth, age, marital status, gender, religion, nationality and full street address. A "Personal Details" or "Declaration" block comes off whole.

Step 3: Set the section order for your experience level

Relevant roles with achievements: Work Experience straight after the summary. Thin experience: Australian Project Experience first, then Work Experience.

Step 4: Add an Australian Project Experience section

Three to five pieces of Australian coursework, capstone, volunteering or internship work, each with a plain-English title, institution, city, year and two achievement bullets.

Step 5: Convert spelling, dates and numbers

Document language set to English (Australia), every US spelling fixed, date ranges as Month YYYY to Month YYYY, money in Australian dollars, phone in local format.

Step 6: Check length and references

One page with thin experience, about two once you have project and casual work worth showing. Two referees, ideally Australian, plus LinkedIn recommendations. Then paste the resume and a job ad into the free Australian resume check, which reports what it actually finds on your document, such as a missing work-rights line, US spelling or a keyword gap against the ad, rather than a score.

If the format is clean and you are still not hearing back, the cause is usually positioning, not layout. Why your resume is not getting interviews in Australia walks through the five checkable causes.

The Australian resume format for an international student is a one to two page, single-column document with a clean header, a work-rights line, a summary, Australian project evidence near the top, grouped skills and tertiary education only. Copy the template, run the six steps on your own document, and you have removed every formatting signal that gets a student resume set aside before a human reads it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an Australian address on my resume?

You need an Australian location, not an address. Suburb and state are enough, for example "Parramatta, NSW", on the contact line. A full street address is left off Australian resumes, and a recruiter only needs to know you are in or near the city the role is based in.

Can an international student use a one-page resume in Australia?

Yes. One page is fine when your experience is thin. Move to about two pages once you have Australian project work, casual roles and internships worth showing. Do not pad to reach two pages and do not force a US-style single page by shrinking the font.

Should I list my high school on an Australian resume?

No. Once you hold or are completing a tertiary qualification, list tertiary education only, highest first, with the expected or actual graduation year. Year 10 and Year 12 results, board exams and primary schooling come off. Omit a low GPA unless an employer asks for it.

Do I include references on an Australian student resume?

Yes, keep two referees, ideally Australian, at the end of the document, plus recommendations on your LinkedIn profile. A lecturer who supervised a capstone, a casual-work manager or an internship lead all work. Do not drop the section to save space.
